The Bujinkan is a worldwide organization under the supervision and guidance of Grandmaster (Soke) Masaaki Hatsumi. He is considered by the Government of Japan to be, not only a national treasure, but also the last living ninja. Shihan Chavez, like all Bujinkan master level instructors, is considered a personal student of the Grandmaster.

Robert Chavez began his martial arts training in 1996, while stationed in Japan, under the direction of Shihan Robert Fraser (15th Dan). Shihan Fraser spent 18 years training in Japan under Soke and he runs the Shirowashi Oahu Bujinkan in Hawaii (martialartsites.com/shirowashi). Also, Shihan Joseph Adriance (15th Dan) has also been an important influence on Robert's development. In 2004 Shihan Chavez passed the first significant milestone within the Bujinkan called the"Godan test", given by Soke himself. It signifies entering instructor level ranks (5th through 9th degree blackbelt). Since that time Sensei Chavez has been primarily under the direction of Nagato Sensei who has been responsible for most of his promotions after 5th Dan. The 10th Dan promotion is the second significant milestone within the Bujinkan and signals entering the Master level ranks(10th through 15th degree blackbelt). It is accompanied by the title change from Shidoshi (Intructor) to Shihan (Master level instructor). Currently an 11th Dan, Shihan Chavez is among the estimated 300 Master level instructors worldwide and travels back to Japan biannually for continued training by Soke, Nagato Sensei and the other major Shihans. Pictured and identified below are Shihan Chavez' instructors.
